BIG DANCE 2012 FESTIVAL

Posted on 5 May 2011

Royal Ballet resident choreographer Wayne McGregor announced yesterday details of Big Dance 2012 which will include a performance of 2000 people in Trafalgar Square next year.

Wayne McGregor will direct the routine at the centre of the festival, which as part of the Cultural Olympiad, will become nationwide in 2012.
The festival will run from July 7-15 with the 2000 strong dance routine in Trafalgar Square to take place on July 14, 2012.

McGregor added: “I am excited at the prospect of being part of Big Dance 2012. A major part of my preoccupation over the last few years has been to see how I can find ways to inspire creativity among young dancers and choreographers. Trafalgar Square will be the ultimate dance stage for all of us to work on.”

The event will work through five centres throughout London including English National Ballet, Greenwich Dance, East London Dance, Siobhan Davies Dance and Sadler's Wells.

To get you in the mood for next year's Big Dance, Sadler's Wells would be the perfect place to start. Northern Ballets new production of Cleopatra will run from 17-21 May. Hot on their points will be Rambert Dance Company also at Sadler's Wells from 24-28 May performing three pieces including Roses, Monolith and Henrietta Horn's Cardoon Club. Then award winning Canadian choreographer David St-Pierre will bring his controversial show, featuring 20 naked dancers, to Sadler's Wells from 2-4 June. Be sure to get in early as this one is predicted to sell fast.
