About Uncle Vanya

RUSSIAN DIRECTOR ANDREI KONCHALOVSKY BRINGS ACCLAIMED CHECKOV PRODUCTIONS TO LONDON’S WEST END: UNCLE VANYA & THREE SISTERS

The internationally renowned film/theatre director, producer and screenwriter Andrei Konchalovsky will transfer his productions of Anton Checkov’s UNCLE VANYA and THREE SISTERS from Moscow’s Moccobeta State Academic Theatre to London’s Wyndham’s Theatre between 23 April and 3 May 2014.

Feeding an increasing appetite for international theatre in London, with extended seasons of Russian Ballet at the Coliseum and a growing number of foreign language productions in the West End, UNCLE VANYA & THREE SISTERS will be performed in their original Russian with English subtitles. Andrei Konchalovsky has utilized the same setting and cast for both productions, drawing on the striking similarities between Checkov’s two most celebrated plays.

Speaking about transferring both productions to London Andrei Konchalovsky said "I am delighted to bringing these two Russian productions to London's West End. No matter how many times you appeal to Chekhov, he is inexhaustible. Every time his work is seen on stage, you find something unnoticed, unexperienced and undiscovered"

Andrei Konchalovsky is a renowned theatre and film director as well as a screenwriter. His film credits include IN THE DARK, THE LION IN WINTER (Golden Globe nomination 2005), HOUSE OF FOOLS (Grand Special Prize, Venice International Film Festival 2002), THE INNER CIRCLE, TANGO AND CASH, DUET FOR ONE, RUNAWAY TRAIN and UNCLE VANYA. In 1980 he was named People's Artist of Russia and later he was awarded the Order of 4th Degree for Services to the Homeland in 1997; In 2002 Andrei was made a member of the National Academy for Cinematographic Arts and Science and an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2005.

Moccobeta State Academic Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Moscow having been founded in 1923. In the 1970s well-known Russian director Pavel Khomsky became first the principal director, and then the artistic director of the theatre. Mossovet has been enthusiastically received in many countries: France, USA, Finland, Israel, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria and across the world.

Performed in Russian with English surtitles.
