Why The Whales Came

Set in the Isles of Scilly, Why the Whales Came is based on the best-selling book by Michael Morpurgo, and follows the adventures of Daniel and Gracie as they unravel some of the myths surrounding the mysterious Birdman. They try to avoid Big Tim, who is the local bully, but also happens to be Daniel's brother. They learn news of the war with Germany from their teacher; Mr. Wellbeloved, and they discover the truth about Samson, the haunted, deserted island...

Why the Whales Came is set on Bryher, one of the Isles of Scilly. Life in 1914 on Bryher, where the story is set would have been hard. The islanders lived on what they could catch or grow, mainly fish and potatoes. Some flowers were grown to sell. Shipwrecks around the islands were looked on as blessings by the islanders, who were able to salvage the goods and sell them. In the story, Daniel and Gracie have to save a narwhal that has become stranded on the beach. The narwhal is a type of whale similar to a beluga, that usually lives within the arctic circle...
