Broken Glass

Antony Sher will reprise his performance in Arthur Miller’s BROKEN GLASS, when it is revived at the Tricycle theatre before transferring to the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre.

He will be joined in the production, which performs at The Vaudeville from 14 September to 10 December, by Tara Fitzgerald.

Broken Glass, Miller’s Olivier award-winning drama, tells the story of Phillip and Sylvia Gellburg, a New York couple living in Brooklyn in 1938.

Phillip, obsessed with work and his own desire to assimilate, has little time for his wife, but when Sylvia suddenly becomes paralysed after reading newspaper reports of Kristallnacht in Germany, Dr. Harry Hyman is called in. As he gets closer to the source of Sylvia’s affliction, a relationship develops that could have devastating consequences on the family, and themes of guilt, personal tragedy and love start to unfold.

Miller’s Broken Glass follows a Jewish couple living in New York, whose lives are shaken by the anti-Semitic events of Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany. When Phillip (Sher) asks a psychiatrist to help his wife Sylvia (Fitzgerald) recover from the trauma, the subsequent conversations reveal other problems in the couple’s relationship.

Sher starred in Broken Glass when it was staged at the Tricycle, directed by Iqbal Khan, in the autumn of 2010. Most recently seen on television in BBC2 drama The Shadow Line, the multi award-winning South Africa-born actor boasts London credits including Richard III, Kean, Primo, Stanley and Torch Song Trilogy.

Fitzgerald may be best known for playing Dr Eve Lockhart in recently cancelled BBC crime drama Waking The Dead, from which she will be given her own spin-off series, The Body Farm. The star of films including Sirens and Brassed Off was last seen in the West End starring opposite Keira Knightley in The Misanthrope.
