About the theatre

The Menier Chocolate Factory has been a full time producing house since 2004, and comprises a theatre, restaurant, bar and rehearsal space. 

Productions include Americana Absurdum by Brian Parks, the UK premiere of Fully Committed by Becky Mode (which transferred to the Arts Theatre), Murderer by Anthony Shaffer, the European premiere of Tick, Tick… Boom! by Jonathan Larson, the world premiere of What We Did to Weinstein by Ryan Craig, the multi-award winning revival of Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine (subsequent transfers to Wyndham's Theatre and then Studio 54 on Broadway until July 2008), Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson by Chris England, the UK premiere of The Last 5 Years by Jason Robert Brown, Little Shop of Horrors by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken which transferred to the Duke of York’s and Ambassadors theatres, Total Eclipse by Christopher Hampton, the world premiere of new musical Take Flight by Richard Maltby Jr, David Shire and John Weidman, Dealer’s Choice by Patrick Marber (which transferred to Trafalgar Studios),La Cage aux Folles by Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein (winner of Best Musical 2008 Critics' Circle Theatre Awards, Best Musical Revival Olivier Awards 2009, transferred to the Playhouse Theatre, West End and Longacre Theatre, Broadway), Maria Friedman: Re-Arranged (subsequent transfer to Trafalgar Studios), The Common Pursuit by Simon Gray, They’re Playing Our Song by Neil Simon, Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, The White Devil by John Webster, A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler (which transferred to the Garrick Theatre, West End and Walter Kerr Theatre, Broadway), the Ben Travers comedy Rookery Nook ,Forbidden Broadway by Gerard Alessandrini, Talent by Victoria Wood, Sweet Charity by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields (which transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket), Shirley Valentine / Educating Rita by Willy Russell (transferred to the Trafalgar Studios), Aspects of Love by Andrew Lloyd Webber, A Number by Carol Churchill,The Invisible Man by Ken Hill, Ruby Wax - Losing It (transferred to the Duchess Theatre, West End), SMASH! by Jack Rosenthal and the European premiere of Road Show by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman.

Throughout its history, the Menier Chocolate Factory building has been inspired by both individuality and the pursuit of quality. Built in 1870 to house a chocolate factory, this unique space now comprises a restaurant and bar, rehearsal room and 150 seat theatre. Having maintained the original exposed wooden beams, unusual cast iron columns and an amazing brick feature interior, the Chocolate Factory is a stimulating environment to enjoy a high-quality and entertaining theatrical experience.
