Diana Vishneva: On the Edge celebrates the extraordinary artistic versatility of one of today’s greatest dancers. Praised for her dazzling technique and dramatic intensity, Vishneva is the star of two works commissioned specifically for her: Jean-Christophe Maillot’s intriguing pas de trois Switch, and Carolyn Carlson’s profound solo work Woman in a Room.

Maillot, choreographer-director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, set Switch to music by the Academy Award®-nominated and Grammy® Award-winning composer Danny Elfman. Vishneva calls the piece “a story about a woman, her alter ego and her relationship with men.” Woman in a Room was created for the internationally renowned, award-winning star of the Mariinsky Ballet and American Ballet Theatre by Carlson, director of National Centre for Contemporary Choreography in Roubaix and of the Atelier de Paris at La Cartoucherie de Vincennes in Paris. “Carolyn is a choreographer who understands a woman’s soul,” says Vishneva. Inspired by the films of Andrei Tarkovsky, Woman in a Room is an evocative work that follows one woman’s journey in life, filled with joys, bitterness and contemplation. The music is by Italian post-minimalist composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima with a finale piece by René Aubry.

Financial Times praised Switch for its “sleek, rippling choreography,” and noted that Vishneva “imbues [Woman in a Room] with inner life.” Archaic Press magazine said, “With the grace of a ballerina and the movements of a lyrical poet, Vishneva brings ballet into the 21st century and paves a way for the ballet of the future.”

Diana Vishneva: On the Edge received its World Premiere at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California in November 2014. It received its European premiere in 2015 at the National Centre for Contemporary Choreography in Roubaix, followed by performances in Monte-Carlo at the Salle Garnier, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

This production is performed to a specially conceived and mastered soundtrack.
