A little about the Ages of the Moon play

This Sam Shepard play visits issues of aging and loss and friendship and time. This touching and captivating show is receiving its long-overdue UK premiere, a decade after its world premiere at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 2009.

The summer night is hot and the air is sluggish. Ames has been banished to his isolated countryside home by his wife and seeks to fill the still of the night with the company of his oldest friend. Ames and Byron are reunited by and reconnect over their shared loneliness, and a bottle of Bourbon. As the light of the eclipsing moon wanes, the old friends reminisce and reflect on love and life, but as their old rivalries begin to resurface, the decades-long friendship is tested in the sights of a gun.

Cast and Creatives of Ages of the Moon

The roles originated by Seán McGinley and Stephen Rea under the director Jimmy Fay at the Abbey Theatre world premiere will be reimagined in this atmospheric new production by Christopher Fairbank and Joseph Marcell

Fairbank has numerous film and television credits but is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Moxey in the beloved comedy series  Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. Joseph Marcell is best known for his comedic work as Geoffrey Butler on hit television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, though the actor has long been involved with the Royal Shakespeare Company and last year performed in Lady Windermere's Fan at London’s Vaudeville Theatre

The new production will be directed by award-nominated director Alexander Lass, whose recent credits include 46 Beacon at Trafalgar Studios and No Man's Land starring Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.

Playwright Sam Shepard had a prolific career that spanned fifty years. With ten Obie Awards for writing and directing he won the award more times than anyone else. In 1979 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Buried Child.  Some of his other notable works include Kicking a Dead Horse, True West, and Fool For Love.
