Frinton Summer Theatre in association with Park Theatre present Black Chiffon

The critically acclaimed revival of Lesley Storm’s play has transferred to London’s Park Theatre this autumn for a short run beginning 18 September and with its final performance on 12 October. The original production in the 1940s ran for over 400 performances in the West End and then later toured and made its way over to Broadway. There’s no doubt that Black Chiffon tickets are going to be in high demand; this revival has been eagerly awaited and it's going to be unmissable!

What is Black Chiffon About?

Black Chiffon follows the ever so respectable Mrs Alicia Christie; who maintains her beautiful home, tends to her clever husband, and dotes on her devoted children. These are all the qualities of an upstanding woman in society surely? However, on the eve of her beloved son’s wedding, she defies her reputation and defies society, when she steals a black chiffon nightdress from a high-end department store. The play is an insight into the stresses of society that brings a woman to her breaking point, but now she must face the consequences of her crime. Will she go to jail or will she lie? What lengths will she go to to protect her family?

The cast of Black Chiffon

In the starring role of Alicia Christie is Abigail Cruttenden. The actress has various stage credits as well as popular film and tv roles. Abigail’s theatre work includes Afterlife (National Theatre), The Knot of the Heart (Almeida Theatre) and When Did You Last See My Mother? (Trafalgar Studios). She has also appeared on the big and little screen in the likes of The Theory of Everything, Not Going Out (BBC) and Fresh Meat (Channel 4).

Also joining the cast is well-versed actor Ian Kelly in the role of Robert. Ian has impressive theatre, television and film credits. He’s popularly known in theatre for his role of Robert Lyon in the National Theatre’s production of Pitmen Painters, which was a huge success with a four-year run; in the West End, on Broadway and three sell-out runs at the National Theatre itself. His film and tv works include Kingsman 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Downton Abbey.

The cast is completed by Nicholas Murchie as Dr Hawkins (A Royal Night Out), Yvonne Newman as Nannie (reprising her role in Black Chiffon), Jack Staddon as Roy (Midsomer Murders), Eva Feiler as Thea (The Winter’s Tale) and Jemima Watling as Louise (After Dark).

About the writer Lesley Storm

Lesley had a writing career that spanned for forty-three years, in which she wrote seventeen plays, eleven novels, seven-film scripts and a volume of short stories. She was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and named Mabel Margaret Cowie, which she changed to Mabel Clark when she got married. Lesley Storm was a pen name! She published her first novel, ‘Lady, What of Life?’ in 1927 at the age of just 24. Black Chiffon was her most celebrated play which premiered in 1949. Her work often focused on women and the effects that a constraining society had on them – many of her female characters are punished for sexual or social indiscretions.
