About the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre

The theatre was founded in 1934 and has long since been associated with a number of Russian icons and international dance stars, including the famed Russian ballet dancer Galina Ulanova, the great opera star Larisa Aleksandrovskaya, and the esteemed Soviet-Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev. It’s taken many years, but the theatre has managed to gradually promote its cultural heritage around the world with its highly-acclaimed ballets and operas. The Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre additionally frequently stage masterpieces from both Western Europe and Russia as part of its sizeable repertoire.

About Michel Fokine, the choreographer behind the ballets

In a bid to break from tradition after growing frustrated with the lack of innovation, Michel Fokine was a radical choreographer in search of new expressions and forms. The result was Chopiniana, a piece that revolutionised the art of dance with its musical unity, cross-cutting actions, scenography, and choreography. It depicted the rich life story of the famous Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin. Featuring a plethora of narratives, the title of the work was eventually renamed Les Sylphides.

Fokine’s rejection of conventional dance continued with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, which took on erotic themes and non-classical ballet movements. Featuring imagery of an exotic Golden Slave, phallic symbols, and orgiastic scenes, the ballet was a true tour-de-force that demonstrated his adept skill of form and seemingly unlimited capabilities of the body as a canvas. The piece turned some heads and raised some eyebrows but became a phenomenal success all the same.

The fantastic ballet company of the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre are guaranteed to blow audiences away with their refined skills, unwavering concentration, dedication, and meticulous drive in achieving perfection. This new, unconventional reimagining of an internationally renowned ballet repertoire is certainly not one to be missed!
