Arthur Miller’s classic play through a new lens

This American classic follows the fading days of an ageing salesman and his family and their idea of the American dream. Arthur Miller’s most read, most produced play won him a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. Revivals of the piece consistently snap up awards.

This newest production of the classic work brings out nuances of the play as seen through the eyes of an African-American family. Superbly realized by Wendell Pierce, who makes his West End debut in this production, and the stunning Olivier Award-winning Sharon D. Clarke watch Death of a Salesman come to life at the Picadilly Theatre in London’s West End.

Death of a Salesman cast and creatives

It has been confirmed that Wendell Pierce and Sharon D. Clarke will both reprise their roles in the upcoming transfer. The remainder of the West End cast has yet to be confirmed but the run at the Young Vic saw some incredible talent including Arinzé Kene (Misty, Been So Long) as Biff Loman. They were joined by Ian Bonar, Trevor Cooper, Martins Imhangbe, Joseph Mydell, Nenda Neurer, Jennifer Saayeng, Matthew Seadon-Young, Maggie Service and Femi Temowo.

Wendell Pierce plays Willy Loman, the play’s titular salesman. He is best known for his roles in American television shows Suits and The Wire. He has also starred in films such as Selma and narrated many documentaries. The actor is no stranger to the stage, though, the initial run of this production marked his UK stage debut and the transfer will be his West End debut.

For the  Death of a Salesman Piccadilly Theatre run, Sharon D. Clarke reprises her role as Linda Loman. The actress won an Oliver Award for her recent role in Caroline, or Change. She has also worked on stage in Guys and Dolls, The Amen Corner, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She has appeared in television shows like Holby City, EastEnders and The Singing Detective.
Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell direct this transfer. Fresh from her award-winning direction of Company, Marianne Elliott co-directs Death of a Salesman with Miranda Cromwell, who was previously the Associate director on both Company and Angels in America.

Death of a Salesman London tickets are sure to go quickly following the sold-old Young Vic run. Make sure you secure your seats now to the run at the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End from 24 October 2019 to 4 January 2020.
