Christoph Gluck’s account of the Orpheus myth is said to be a revolutionary opera of the 18th century. In collaboration with Studio Wayne McGregor, the English National Opera brings this iconic opera to the London Coliseum for the 2019/2020 ENO season and tickets for Orpheus and Eurydice are a must!

What is the Orpheus & Eurydice opera about?

This part of the Orpheus myth follows a grief-stricken Orpheus, who is willing to go any lengths to be reunited with his one true love, and with permission from the gods, he ventures to rescue his wife from the underworld. However, there’s a catch in which Orpheus can’t look back at Eurydice or she’ll be lost to him forever.

Who is Christoph Gluck?

Christoph Gluck is a Bohemian-Austrian composer of Italian and French opera and was a pioneer in opera in the latter half of the 18th century. Along with librettist Calzabigi, they wrote three reform operas, one of which was Orpheus and Eurydice. (The other two were: Alceste and Paride de Elena.) Gluck’s score is filled with uplifting melodies and rich orchestral writing which spans from Orpheus’ anguished outbursts to the death of his wife Eurydice, and through to the classical beauty of the ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits’.
