The Snow Queen will reign over Park Theatre this Christmas!

Adapted from the story by Hans Christian Anderson, made popular by Disney’s Frozen, this play focuses on the origins of the queen who brings endless winter. The show has an extremely limited engagement, running from 4 December 2019 to 4 January, and with it being the Christmas season, tickets for The Snow Queen are going to be gone quicker than anyone can mention ‘Let It Go’.

The story of The Snow Queen

Based on the original story The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, this story too sees Gerda go on an epic quest to save her best friend from the icy grip of the snow queen. Her best friend in this adaptation by Charles Way, however, is a boy renamed Cei. Gerda battles through changing seasons in order to save Cei from a never-ending winter. Despite their nasty teacher Mr Oversko, and with the help of bickering flowers, the confusion of princes and princesses, Bae the talking reindeer and, of course, snow fights, the pair just might be ready to grow up. Join Gerda on her journey for the frosty holiday season this year for a thrilling family day out.

The writer of The Snow Queen

As previously mentioned, and which is likely common knowledge, Hans Christian Anderson wrote the original fairy tale, which was published in 1844, however, it has been adapted by playwright Charles Way. The Snow Queen was first produced in 2008 by the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff. Charles began training as an actor at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, where he wrote plays for other students to perform. In 1977 he joined the Leeds Playhouse Theatre as an actor but began to offer his services as a writer. A year later he joined the Theatre Centre in London as a resident writer. He has worked for various theatres as a resident writer and as his career progressed became more well known for being a children’s playwright. Charles Way has received numerous awards and nominations for his works, as well as being highly regarded and acclaimed, his works always receiving praising reviews.

The creative team behind The Snow Queen

The director for Charles Way’s The Snow Queen is Abigail Anderson. She started directing at Oxford University and later trained at Central School of Speech & Drama. However, she states that most of what she has learned and uses in her every day as a director, she learned from watching other directors and working with actors. Anderson works as a freelance director and Associate Director at the Theatre Royal.

The designer for the production is Gregor Donnelly. He is both a set and costume designer for which he trained at Motley Theatre Design Course 2011. Donnelly has designed for theatre, concerts and events in the UK and internationally. In 2016 he was nominated for Best Set Design and Best Costume Design at the Off West End Awards for Benighted and Best Costume Design at Off West End Awards for The Autumn Garden. In 2018 he was nominated for Best Set Design at the Off West End Awards for Peter Pan.
