What is The View UpStairs about?

Wes, a 21st-century fashion designer, has just purchased an old and forgotten building in the French Quarter of New Orleans. But little does he know just how bumpin’ and happenin’ this building once was just four decades ago. The now abandoned property used to be known in the 70s as the UpStairs Lounge, a flamboyant and in-your-face gay bar where bell bottoms flared for miles and disco hits blared. Soon Wes gets sucked into a soulful trip filled with sensual seduction and self-discovery. The show’s summertime setting full of love, sex, and incense combined with its summertime release at London's Soho Theatre will make you feel as if you’re on the same groovy trip suspended from space and time.

The View UpStairs has received unprecedented acclaim from both audiences, critics and celebrities alike. The one and only RuPaul called the show 'fantastic' while Entertainment Weekly called it 'vibrant' and a 'moving homage to LGBT culture.' It has also been praised for its 'jambalaya' of sexy songs, which are performed by a stellar cast.

The original Off-Broadway show has received a fleet of award nominations, including the nomination for Best New Musical at the Off-Broadway Alliance Awards; three Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Set Design of a Musical (Jason Sherwood), Outstanding Costume Design (Anita Yavich), and Outstanding Wig and Hair (Jason Hayes); four Audelco Awards nominations for Best Director/Musical Production (Scott Ebersold), Musical Production of the Year, Outstanding Musical Director (James Dobinson), and Outstanding Performance in a Musical - Male (Nathan Lee Graham); two Lortel Award nominations for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Scenic Design; and two Henry Hewes Design Award nominations for Scenic Design and Costume Design.

What happened at the real UpStairs Lounge?

The View UpStairs is inspired by the real-life 1973 arson attack on the UpStairs Lounge in New Orleans, Louisiana. Having claimed 32 lives, it was once the largest single attack against the LGBT community until 43 years later, when the devastating 2016 Pulse Nightclub shootings in Orlando, Florida took the lives of 49 people. The arson attack took place on the last day of Pride Weekend with the only suspect being Rodger Dale Nunez, who allegedly suffered from 'conversion hysteria.' He confessed to a friend that he had squirted lighter fluid on the nightclub's bottom steps, but later took his own life before police could capture him a second time.
