Brian Friel’s play about language: Translations

After the enormous success of last year’s run, Translations is returning to London’s Oliver Theatre at the National for 2 months only!

Owen is the proverbial prodigal son returned home. He has in tow two British army officers who are looking to map the area. They are set on replacing the original names with English versions. This menial administrative decision will have severe impacts. Hugh (Ciarán Hinds) is Owen’s father and a teacher at the local hedge-school who takes language very seriously. He feels that his livelihood and way of life are at risk.

This powerful play examines the importance of language and reflects the troubled history between England and Ireland as it plays out in one small, isolated community.

Translations Cast and Creatives

This run of Translations will see Ciarán Hinds reprise his role as family patriarch Hugh. Hinds is known for his work on television shows like Game of Thrones, in films like the Harry Potter franchise and on stage in Closer and Girl From the North Country. Also reprising their roles are Dermot Crowley (As You Like It, Richard III, Breakfast at Tiffany's) as Jimmy Jack, Judith Roddy (A Doll's House) as Mairie, Rufus Wright (Mary Stuart) as Captain Lancey, and Seamus O’Hara (Game of Thrones, A Streetcar Named Desire) as Manus.

Amy Molloy (Cyprus Avenue) joins the cast as Bridget with Fra Fee (Les Miserables, The Ferryman, Durty Dancing)  coming on board as Owen. Jack Bardoe (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is set to play  Lieutenant Yolland with Julian Moore-Cook (The Lieutenant of Inishmore) as Doalty and Liádan Dunlea (The Alienist) as Sarah.

The cast are completed by Gareth Clarke (Blithe Spirit, Witness for the Prosecution, Ghost Stories), Adam Collier (We're Going on a Bear Hunt), Paul Lloyd (Anthony and Cleopatra, King Lear), Sarah Madigan (The Play That Goes Wrong, Celebration) and Michael-David McKernan (Sucking Dublin, Fantastic Mr Fox) who comprise the ensemble and understudy various roles.

Translations was written by Brian Friel in 1980. Ian Rickson, who has made a name for himself directing shows on Broadway and in the West End, returns to direct Translations. His previous West End work includes the Children’s Hour, The Birthday Party, Rosmersholm and the upcoming Uncle Vanya at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The play features songs by Stephen Warbeck with sound by Ian Dickinson. Lighting is by Neil Austin with design and costumes by Rae Smith and choreography by Anna Morrisey.
