Tootsie Musical London transfer coming soon to a West End theatre near you?

The Broadway production of Tootsie has received more than enough critical approval to solidify its spot on Broadway, yet sadly not even its two Tony Award wins can stop this powerhouse musical from having to close. The New York Marquis Theater production was capitalised for approximately $20 million but will unlikely be able to recoup its investment costs at the box office. That being said, Tootsie The Musical is set to hit the road on a North American tour in Autumn 2020 and given its need to search for profits, it’s quite possible a West End transfer of Tootsie could be in the works. Keep your fingers crossed because Tootsie may be coming to snatdoch some wigs in London soon!

What is Tootsie The Musical about? 

The Tootsie musical plot is rather simple. It follows a once-respected and now jobbing actor named Michael Dorsey in New York City where no one wants to hire him anymore due to his difficult and perfectionist personality. In desperation, he cross dresses as a woman named Dorothy Michaels for an audition to an important part that could help progress his career.

There are some minor differences between the musical Tootsie and the classic American comedy film of the same name. Both tell the story of a talented actor who adopts an identity as a woman to get an acting gig. In the film, this gig is a role on a daytime soap opera while in the musical adaptation, this gig is a part in a Broadway musical itself (a musical within a musical). Though the Tootsie musical on Broadway has no real surprises for anyone who has ever seen the original film before, it is set in modern times as opposed to in the 80s and is chock-full of brilliant one-liners, quips, and outstanding acting skills from a wonderful cast.

The original Broadway cast of Tootsie stars Santino Fontana as Michael Dorsey / Dorothy Michaels, Lilli Cooper as Julie Nichols, Sarah Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Van Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Marshall, Michael McGrath as Stan Fields, and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.

The Broadway cast is completed by Sissy Bell (swing), Barry Busby (swing / dance captain / associate choreographer) and ensemble members Adam Monley, Anthony Wayne, Britney Coleman, Diana Vaden, Drew King, Harris Milgrim, James Moye, Jeff Kready, Jenifer Foote, John Arthuer Greene, Katerina Papacostas, Leslie Donna Flesner, Nick Spangler, Paula Leggett Chase, and Shina Ann Morris.

It’s quite possible that the original Broadway cast members will reprise their roles for the Tootsie musical West End transfer in the event that a London production is announced.

The Broadway musical features a Tony Award-winning book from Robert Horn (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Band’s Visit) who wrote Tootsie The Musical together with 2018 Tony Award winner David Yazbek, who provided the outrageously clever music and lyrics. Tootsie was directed on Broadway by Scott Ellis and features choreography by Denis Jones, scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Donald Holder, sound design by Brian Ronan, hair and wig design by Paul Huntley, make-up design by Angelina Avallone, dance arrangements by David Chase, orchestrations by Simon Hale, production management by Aurora Productions, associate direction by Dave Solomon, production and stage management by Scott Taylor Rollison, and general management by Bespoke Producers.

The Tootsie creative team also features vocal and incidental arrangements by Andrea Grody who also serves as music director and music supervisor, plus Dean Sharenow as music supervisor and coordinator, and Scott Sanders and Carl Fineman as lead producers. The musical is based on the hit 1982 film, which features an original screenplay by Don McGuire and Larry Gelbart.

Is Tootsie musical transphobic?

Since its release, some activists have called Tootsie a ‘transphobic’ musical. However, this is in no way the show’s intention. The musical is based on the original 1982 film of the same name and only depicts characters who are misogynistic, not trans-misogynistic. The lead character is about an actor struggling to get a job who resorts to dressing as a woman. It’s not much different than Mrs Doubtfire, another musical based on a film that features themes of cross-dressing and deception. It is purely for entertainment only.
