Considered to be one of the greatest films of all time and now coming close to 75 years old, It's A Wonderful Life has finally been adapted for the stage by none other than living legend and former Beatles star Paul McCartney. The singer-songwriter joined forces with the esteemed theatre producer and West End maven, Bill Kenwright (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), and English playwright Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) to deliver one of the soon-to-be-greatest Christmas musicals of our generation.

How the new musical adaptation of It's A Wonderful Life came to be
While this isn't the first time that It's A Wonderful Life was adapted for the stage (it was previously adapted by writers Bruce Greer and Keith Ferguson), it marks the first fully-fledged out musical for the West End stage. Bill Kenwright tried to acquire the rights to stage It's A Wonderful Life when he was younger but his request was denied. After finally obtaining the rights, he approached Paul McCartney three years ago to set up a meeting with Lee Hall. The production has been in the works ever since with McCartney assigned to write the music and lyrics and Hall tasked with the lyrics and book. The long-awaited stage adaptation is expected to open in late 2020, probably just in time for Christmas.
What is It's A Wonderful Life about?
The original 1946 American Christmas film was directed by renowned Italian director Frank Capra and starred James Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore (great uncle of Drew Barrymore) in the lead roles. George Bailey has settled down and settled for less, having put his life-long dreams on the back burner and giving up his ambitions. With a wife and kids to feed, George's life comes crashing down when he realises he misplaced $8,000 dollars (now $95,000 dollars when adjusted for inflation) for his father's building and loan business. Mr. Potter, who wants nothing but to take control of the entire town of Bedford Falls, finds the money and hides it from George, hoping to put him behind bars so that he can finally rise to power. George soon contemplates suicide but a guardian angel brings him back to the light after showing George what the world would be like had he never been born.
While the concept of the "Christmas miracle" was nothing new, It's A Wonderful Life certainly helped popularise the term along with Miracle on 34th Street.
