The Book Of Mormon breaks one-day box office sales record

Posted on 27 March 2013

According to a press statement from the producers of the hit Broadway transfer, The Book Of Mormon has smashed the record for single day sales for any show in West End or Broadway history.   It was announced that "between 10am and midnight on Friday 22nd March, the day after opening, £2,107,972 was taken in ticket sales."   Producer Sonia Friedman added "On behalf of everyone involved in The Book of Mormon, we are bowled over to be setting this quite extraordinary record."

The show won nine Tony Awards in the US and was helmed by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker as well as Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez.   Critical and public reaction to the piquant show has been almost universally positive, with online chatter on Facebook and Twitter by fans helping anticipation for the UK production build up speed months before the show went on sale.   Cameron Mackintosh who owns the Prince Of Wales theatre where the Book Of Mormon London show is based said "After a phenomenal opening night I am delighted to see a phenomenal record-breaking post opening box office of over £2million.   The Mormons have truly delivered a Heavenly hit!"

150,000 additional seats were recently released which extended the show's West End tenure to January 11 2014, and demand seems to be showing no sign of slowing down.
