BLOG : Constellations: A Romantic Comedy With Added Physics

Constellations Friday 24 July 2015

Sometimes, when all you hear of a play is amazing reviews, it can seem a bit too good to be true. I've yet to hear anyone say a bad word about Constellations, directed by Michael Longhurst and recently arrived back in the West End at Trafalgar Studios after a UK tour - and this made me simultaneously desperate to see it and anxious that it wouldn't live up to my towering expectations. But as it turns out, I needn't have worried.

BLOG : Theatre Etiquette (Part Three) – The Audience

Bend It Like Beckham Thursday 23 July 2015

In my last blog, we established the Interval Theatre Etiquette. But what about before and after the interval – whilst you are actually in the auditorium, watching a performance? You might not immediately think of this as the time during which theatre etiquette most needs to be established, but think back: how many times have you been sandwiched between the person who won't stop talking and the person who is eating popcorn with unnatural vigour, with people coming in late just in front of you? Of all the theatrical situations with which we Thespians are faced, it could well be that the auditorium itself is the place that is most in need of some etiquette fine-tuning. So what exactly is the etiquette for an audience member?

BLOG : Review: The Mentalists At The Wyndham's Theatre

The Mentalists Thursday 23 July 2015

★★★★ I was fortunate enough to see The Mentalists this week thanks to London Theatre Direct. The Wyndham's Theatre never ceases to amaze me at how beautiful it is. With its bespoke pale eggshell blue wallpaper it's like sitting in a Victorian front parlour with its picture frame stage.

BLOG : What's Coming Up? Openings And Closings In Theatreland

Hetty Feather Tuesday 21 July 2015

As is the nature in the unpredictable, but rewarding, world of London theatre, many of the best shows don’t last forever. With the imminent departure of the epic musical, Miss Saigon, confirmed, many other theatres are using the coming weeks to switch their productions around.

BLOG : Big Shows On A Student Budget: Top Tips For Cheap Theatre Tickets

War Horse Tuesday 21 July 2015

As a student, it may seem as if all of London’s theatres are out of your reach - with top price tickets for some shows soaring over £200 it’s easy to believe there’s no way you’ll get to experience the best entertainment the capital has to offer. But this couldn’t be further from the truth - there are so many ways for students to get cheap theatre tickets for really high quality shows.

BLOG : Review: The Mentalists At The Wyndham's Theatre

The Mentalists Monday 20 July 2015

Since his all-conquering One Man, Two Guvnors, playwright Richard Bean has been on something of a roll to put it mildly: Pitcairn at Chichester and the Globe; Great Britain, his play about the phone hacking scandal, at the National and then transferring to the West End; the book for the ridiculously short-lived musical Made In Dagenham, and a revival of his debut play Toast at the Park Theatre. Now comes a new production of The Mentalists at Wyndham’s Theatre, a two-hander that premiered at the National in 2002.

BLOG : In Retrospect: A Look At The History Of ‘Guys And Dolls’

Guys and Dolls Friday 17 July 2015

If you have your eye on Twitter a lot (and if you don’t then, why not!?) then you’ve surely heard the news that the Chichester Festival Theatre revival of Guys and Dolls that ran last year will start previews at the Savoy Theatre on December 10th after Gypsy leaves the Savoy in November (also a revival that transferred from Chichester). So, to celebrate this exciting new revival, I thought I’d take you through the production history of Guys and Dolls much like what I did with Gypsy a few months back.

The Buzz from the Bardette: Death Of A Salesman, Sunny Afternoon And Branagh Casting

Sunny Afternoon Monday 13 July 2015

Hello theatre lovers, apologies for the lack of Bardette news, I’ve been on a sunny holiday and had a busy diary of exciting theatre viewing. One of my highlights has been Bradley Cooper in The Elephant Man. What an outstanding performance by Mr Cooper. We all know he’s a pretty fabulous movie star but I was interested to see if he could act on stage and he didn’t disappoint.

BLOG : Theatre Etiquette (Part Two) – The Interval

Sunny Afternoon Friday 10 July 2015

It is all about preparation and timing. One cannot simply swan out into the foyer / bar half way through a show and expect to achieve their interval aims – not without preparation. At times it might seem impossible that, in fact, these aims can all be achieved in twenty minutes – especially when you are still despondently shuffling in a queue for the toilets whilst a crowd of people walk smugly past you, straight to the bar, with comfortable bladders … Is it really possible to get everything done in the interval without breaking the Theatre Etiquette?
