Taking on the Kevin Costner role of Bodyguard Frank Farmer is Lloyd Owen who will star opposite Heather Headley in The Bodyguard previewing from 6th November at The Adelphi Theatre .

Torch Song Trilogy directed by Douglas Hodge at the Menier Chocolate Factory has announced the rest of it's cast today, with Joe McFadden joining David Bedella and Sarah Kestelman for the Harvey Fierstein play which runs 30th May to 12th August.  

Award winning actor Mark Rylance who returns to the West End this year in Richard III and Twelfth Night at The Globe and then at the Apollo Theatre later this year will show his acting chops in a starring role at the Olympic opening ceremony.

If you are visiting London and would like to see one of the many famous plays or musicals (or both) on offer, then the best London theatre guide to help you make your choice would be someone who has been there before and experienced it themselves first hand.  If you are good friends with the person and have a lot of the same interests then even better, they can give you an honest opinion about the show and will probably know if you would also like or dislike the overall performance.  Personally I am a fan of the big musicals with grand stage designs, lots of colour, extravagant consumes and of course a fabulously catchy sound track to go along with it.

One of the best places to experience the magic on stage is London’s ‘theatreland’ or as it is more popularly known, the West End district. Shows in West End feature everything from grandiose theatrics of famous stars to subtle nuances of lesser knoawn but often equally talented actors. This means that even if the larger shows are out of your budget, you can still get the taste of Britain’s own Broadway by buying relatively cheap theatre tickets.

From 26 July - 12 August 2012, the Criterion Theatre will present Playing The Games, a programme of work which will celebrate both artistic and sporting talent featuring emerging and established actors, comedians, musicians, playwrights and Olympians. The star-studded programme is led by Kriss Akabusi, Alan Davies, Rick Edwards, Stephen Fry, Edwin Moses and Mark Watson.  

Part of the Michael Frayn season at the Sheffield Crucible, his play Democracy will now transfer for a limited run at the Old Vic previewing from 15th June, officially opening on 20th June to 14th July.

Geordie pop princess Cheryl Cole popped into the BBC Radio 1 studios to promote her new single Call My Name with an interview with DJ Chris Moyles.  After Moyles quizzed her about the impending Girls Aloud reunion and when she had last seen her other bandmates she asked him whether he had seen her bandmate Kimberley Walsh in the hit West End show Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane .

We Will Rock You has proven to be one of the West End's most enduring hits.  Last year they scooped the Audience voted award at the Laurence Olivier Awards for most Popular Show and this year the show will be celebrating it's 10th year anniversary at the Dominion Theatre .

Actor Douglas Hodge is making his directorial debut at the Menier Chocolate Factory with a revival of Torch Song Trilogy by Harvey Fierstein.  The play opens on 30th May for previews with official opening on 12th June until 12th August.

It has just been announced that British star of the new hit American TV series Smash, Raza Jaffrey, will join London's cast of Chicago taking on the roll of Billy Flynn for a very limited time from 16 May to 14 July 2012.

The London cast of the phenomenally well-received National theatre hit, One Man, Two Guvnors have crossed the pond to ensnare US hearts - and it seems to have worked.   

Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer's company Nimax are developing a new London theatre venue in the heart of Theatreland.   Westminster Council have approved the plans for a new state of the art theatre space to be constructed on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Oxford Street above Tottenham Court Road underground station.

As One Man, Two Guvnors triumphs on Broadway, over 100,000 new tickets are released for this five star West End production at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Stephen Fry and Mark Rylance lead the cast in Twelfth Night and Mark Rylance takes on Richard III in the theatrical event of the year!

The coming weeks are an exciting time for London's Dance House, Sadler's Wells, with a full program set out full of performances of various types of dance from all over the world.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the smash hit musical We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre London. To mark the special milestone, they will be holding a special tenth anniversary tribute performance on May 10th. Tickets are now on sale for this special event but are selling fast.

Edward Hall’s Hampstead Theatre production of Chariots of Fire will transfer to the< Gielgud Theatre from 22 June 2012, following its run at the North London venue.  Award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett’s new adaptation, inspired by Colin Welland’s original screenplay, is booking in the West End until 10 November 2012.

According to The Sun newspaper much-loved comedienne Dawn French has been approached by Andrew Lloyd Webber to be one of the judges on his next TV talent show search.  Superstar will see the theatre producer looking for a lead for his upcoming revival of his and Tim Rice's musical Jesus Christ Superstar which is scheduled to open in the O2 prior to a national tour.

Dancing on Ice Head Judge, Robin Cousins will take over the role of lawyer Billy Flynn from David Bedella in Chicago .  He will join the production now on at the Garrick Theatre from 17th July to 8th September.

Michael Attenborough, Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre will be presented with the Award for Excellence In International Theatre at a luncheon held today, 17 April 2012, at the Travellers Club, London.  Neville Shulman, Director of the British Centre of the International Theatre Institute, will present Attenborough with the Award.

The crowd-pleasing, critic-taming beast that is Matilda continued its unstoppable wave of success with a stunning seven wins at the Olivier Awards last night.   The glittering ceremony held at the Royal Opera House and hosted by Sweeney Todd stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton also saw Sheridan Smith, Nigel Harman and Jonny Lee Miller pick up awards.

Richard Eyre returns to the Almeida Theatre to direct the world premiere of Nick Dear’s The Dark Earth and the Light Sky.  Running from 8 November 2012 – 12 January 2013, press night is 15 November 2012.  Designs are by Bob Crowley with lighting by Peter Mumford and sound by John Leonard.  Casting will be announced shortly.


Mozart's most famous opera, Don Giovanni gets a revamp unlike any other at the famous London nightclub, Heaven .  There are only 6 performances either on a Sunday or Monday starting 15th April until 30th April.  Starring in Don Giovanni The Opera is Duncan Rock.

To help with future plans for up his Really Useful Group, Lloyd Webber has now had to sell his first ever theatre purchase, The Palace , in order to help facilitate expensive upkeep on Theatre Royal Drury Lane and planned refurbishment of the London Palladium.  It's a case of real-life Monopoly as the Nimax chain swoop in on another of Lloyd Webber's venues.

According to the Daily Mail, former Legally Blonde star Sheridan Smith has now pulled out at practically the last moment from starring in the West End production of Bridget Jones The Musical, which was looking ready to make it's debut the Savoy Theatre this autumn.

The upcoming 2012 Olivier Awards, widely acknowledged as the highest honours in British Theatreland, will be broadcast live online at both the Olivier Awards official website and that of BBC Radio 2.  The ceremony is set to be a star-studded affair and will be presented by Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton currently wowing the critics in Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre.

Continuing Jermyn Street Theatre’s burgeoning reputation for rediscovering and staging high quality revivals of lost work featuring some of the most respected performers in British theatre , this Spring sees a rare production of Charles Dyer’s modern masterpiece Mother Adam starring Linda Marlowe and Jasper Britton.


Despite having been on stage almost a decade less than The Phantom Of The Opera, Disney's powerhouse musical has managed to overtake Andrew Lloyd Webber's long running classic in total gross revenue over the Easter weekend.  It has been suggested that being housed in a larger venue and being able to command higher ticket prices has helped The Lion King slowly close the gap between the two shows over the last few years.

Upcoming musical Viva Forever based on the back catalogue from the biggest-selling girl group of all time the Spice Girls has been setback by infighting between the two Mels, according to The New York Post.  It seems that Sporty Spice Melanie C and Scary Spice Mel B are at loggerheads over numerous decisions concerning the musical.


If you loved the film, then you have to see the stage musical of Billy Elliot !  The musical is based on the 2000 film with music written by Sir Elton John.  It has been running at the Victoria Palace since 2005 and has been a huge success.  When it first opened, the show was up for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, and won four, one of those being Best New Musical.
