Posted on 19 June 2012

A brand new West End musical based on the classic Roald Dahl children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is set to open next year at the London Palladium.

The world premiere of the production will be 23 June 2013. Directed by Sam Mendes who won an Oscar in 1999 for directing the film American Beauty, his stage work also includes the acclaimed revival of Oliver! in 1994 at the Palladium.

Warner Bros will be backing the new musical along with producer Kevin McCormick and Mendes Neal Street Productions. Music for the show will be written by Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman whose previous work includes the London hit Hairspray and US TV series Smash.

The book has been written by Scottish playwright David Greig while Peter Darling will provide the choreography.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was first published in 1964 in the US and in the UK in 1967  and has been adapted into two films; Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005.

The mysterious Willy Wonka is opening his Chocolate Factory for just one day, and for Charlie Bucket it promises to be a mouth-watering chance to feast his eyes on sweets beyond his wildest imagination.

Tickets will go on sale to the public in October 2012.
