I'm a regular (my wife would say compulsive) theatre-goer, but I have to say that 'BU21' was one of the best things I've seen for a very long time. The writing was superb, as were, without exception, the performances. The interaction of the characters with each other and with the audience; the stage choreography (for example, when the actors sit in a line in the brace position, or use the upturned plastic chairs as a kind of Roman-style shield 'tortoise'); and the astonishing originality of Stuart Slade's take on the catastrophe -- all mark out this play as a special kind of theatrical experience. Who would have thought that a playwright could find humour in a terrorist atrocity and could deploy it without detracting from the horror? Or fold in the conflicts of class, race and religion in contemporary London so seamlessly? Since Pinter and David Mamet we've become accustomed to a more naturalistic style of dialogue, but I have rarely heard the diction of modern young people rendered with such sparkle and veracity. Dan Pick's direction was razor-sharp and pitch-perfect. Thanks to Trafalgar Studios for giving those of us who missed it at Theatre 503 a chance to see 'BU21 in the West End.
