Shrek The Musical

Updated on 21 October 2022

Opening in London's West End in May 2011, Shrek The Musical has been wowing audiences in the Theatre Royal Drury Lane with its magnificent stage set and wonderful show for nearly 6 months now. The production has done so well on Broadway that the producers knew it would be an instant hit across the pond as well, and with celebrated director Jason Moore of Avenue Q on board, it's sure to continue its massive success.

Based on the extremely popular 2001 DreamWorks movie Shrek and William Steig's 1990 book Shrek!, the story is centred around the life of a big green ogre called Shrek and his friends Donkey, Puss in Boots and the Muffin Man. Shrek falls in love with the beautiful, yet sometimes temperamental, Princess Fiona. She is locked away in a tower guarded by a fire breathing love-sick dragon and Shrek and his trusty team of friends embark on an extraordinary adventure to rescue her.

The London production of Shrek will see plenty of famous faces with Shrek being played by Nigel Lindsay, Donkey being played by Richard Blackwood and Amanda Holden playing Princess Fiona to be taken over by Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud in October.

Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in December 2008 and closed after a run of 12 months in January 2010. It was then followed by a tour of the United States which opened in 2010. A second non-equity tour is currently taking place in the US and is expected to conclude in 2012. The musical has also been produced in Israel, Gdynia, Madrid, Paris, Sao Paulo, done a tour of Italy and will be shown in Australia next year.

The 2001 animated film was hugely successful worldwide and featured the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow. The film made a staggering total of $484,409,218.00 at the box office, and with a production budget of $60, it definitely was a huge box office smash. It was the fourth highest grossing film of 2001 behind Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Monsters Inc. It also won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated feature and was nominated for 6 BAFTA Awards winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Shrek The Musical is currently running until February 2012 but with its current popularity it is likely to be extended. Get your Shrek the Musical tickets today and get ready for a hilarious and spectacular show.
