Aladdin Set To Open At The Prince Edward Theatre In 2016?

Posted on 11 September 2015

Unless you’ve spent the past few months living under a musical theatre-less rock, you would be well aware that Disney’s latest screen-to-stage adaptation of their 1991 hit musical film Aladdin The Musical is making plans to hop across the pond from Broadway into London’s West End. As a huge lover of Disney and their stage shows, how exciting is that!? Rumour has it though that the show will be taking residence at the Prince Edward Theatre after their current resident Miss Saigon takes its final flight on February 27th. Nothing is confirmed yet, but doesn’t that seem like the most viable option for them?

If a Spring opening at the Prince Edward was to occur, it wouldn’t be the first time a Disney musical has ran at the Prince Edward Theatre. In fact, the stage adaptation of Mary Poppins opened there before Jersey Boys took residence way back when in 2004! The show went on to have a lengthy run at the theatre as well as an even longer and more successful run over in New York.

Talking of lengthy runs in New York, Aladdin has been playing on Broadway since early 2014 and received 5 Tony Award nominations that year: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for James Monroe Iglehart’s turn as the Genie – the only award the show won was Monroe Iglehart’s.

Aladdin opening at the Prince Edward Theatre will also mean that it will join a long line up of hits that have played the theatre before it. Other than the Miss Saigon revival and the original productions of Jersey Boys and Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia! also made its debut at the Prince Edward as well as Evita in 1978, Chess in 1986 and Martin Guerre in 1996! What a fantastic history of shows!

When the show does confirm its transfer and destination for definite, Aladdin tickets will go on sale; it seems most likely that this will be in the next two months or so. Don’t miss out – this one is going to be a smash!
