The Original Broadway version of The Bridges of Madison County, which won the Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score, had its West End premiere this summer for a strictly limited run at London's Menier Chocolate Factory. Based on the highly acclaimed novel by Robert James Waller and the 1995 film of the same name, which was directed by Clint Eastwood and starred both Eastwood and Meryl Streep, The Bridges of Madison County musical is set to take the London theatre scene by storm!
The Bridges of Madison County is set in the swinging 1960s and follows an Italian housewife and immigrant named Francesca Johnson who leads a seemingly blissful, simple life on a farm in the American Midwest. But when her family embarks on a trip to the Iowa State Fair, she runs into a stranger named Robert Kincaid, a photographer for the National Geographic who has come to Madison County, Iowa on an assignment to shoot photos of covered bridges in the area. What starts out as an innocent friendship quickly unfolds into a full-blown affair, which reaps detrimental consequences on both of their lives.
Developed by the critically acclaimed creative duo Marsha Norman (Pulitzer prize winner for her 1983 play night, Mother) and Jason Robert Brown (Tony Award winner for Best Original Score for Parade, and lyricist and composer for both Songs for a New World and The Last Five Years), The Bridges of Madison County boasts a touching score and heart-wrenching story that is a welcome addition to any London theatre season. The powerful roles of Robert and Francesca are a dream role for any actor whilst the ensemble is packed with rich and well-developed characters who receive the spotlight in their own right as they share their own life stories. The Menier Chocolate Factory run of The Bridges of Madison County will be lead by Jenna Russell as Francesca and Ed Baker-Duly as Robert.
