High School Musical: A Guide to Disney Channel's iconic East High Wildcats

20 years since Disney Channel's hit film graced the millions of living rooms of the early 2000s, beginning literally, the 'Start of Something New', and propelling Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens into a merchandise canon of bedroom posters, cardboard cutouts, singing barbies, and T-shaped jewellery (I admit I was a proud owner of this fine piece of Claire's jewellery tat), *High School Musical* London prepares for the West End stage.
Two decades on Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez, and Sharpay Evans remain household names for the kids of the nineties and noughties and any parent who had to indulge in recreated at-home performances of 'Gotta Go My Own Way' (just me???). And now, after Olivia Rodrigo has reprised the role for TV, in true meta fashion, playing an East High student auditioning for a school production of *HSM*, Rodrigo's reprise comes full circle as we anticipate the West End arrival of *High School Musical* this autumn. For now, we dive into the iconic Wildcats who first bopped this ever-growing franchise right to the top!
### **Getting to know East High's Wildcats: A Character Guide **
**Troy Bolton **
Troy is our charming floppy-haired leading man, torn between the expectations of basketball stardom, driven primarily by his dad (naturally, the school's basketball coach) and the quiet intrigue of other passions he’s uncertain to explore. His junior year is upheaved by the arrival of Gabriella Montez, as the pair quickly find themselves entangled in East High's school musical. As status quos are challenged and school rivals threatened, a myriad of *High School Musical* drama ensues. Navigating pressures from parents, school, and peers, all while falling in love, Troy's seemingly planned out future is knocked right off course.
**Gabriella Montez **
Forementioned high school newbie Gabriella, at first, seems destined to fall neatly into the shy brainiac rung of the school's social hierarchy. Yet underneath, a quiet confidence and infectious curiosity is bubbling; it isn't long before she's chipping away at cemented social convention and causing quite the stir in the school's cafeteria. All the while, catching the eye of Wildcat basketball star, Troy Bolton.
**Sharpay Evans **
Possibly one of Disney's best anti-hero's to emerge, with unforgettable hair, fashion, swagger, and a school locker dreams are made of, (making my first day of secondary school a deeply anticlimactic experience) Sharpay Evans enters as the school Queen Bee who thrives on the established status quo. With dreams of being a star and content at the lack of competition, that is until geeks and athletes are suddenly buzzing around the rehearsal room, painting sets, filling out the chorus, and batting for lead roles. Sharpay is ambitious, determined, spoiled and conniving; though her character development is one of the most engaging of the lot!
**Ryan Evans**
As Sharpay's twin brother, Ryan acts as a much-needed buffer between his sister and the rest of East High, softening the sharp edges of Sharpay's cutthroat musical ambition. He's sympathetic to his sister's frustrations as she endures a new wave of suddenly interested actors from all social cliques but remains aware of her selfish tendencies and reluctance to embrace new peers. As Sharpay's softer counterbalance and overall, a much warmer presence, Ryan serves as a reminder throughout, that the divide between his sister and the rest of East High is built on assumptions and stereotypes from both sides.
**Taylor Mckessie **
Gabriella’s first true friend at East High, Taylor is every bit as brainy but initially just as invested in maintaining the school's carefully balanced social order as Sharpay is (to disrupt this would be messing with the great cosmic order of things - not good). Yet, through Gabriella and Troy's unlikely union, Taylor begins to realise that these boundaries might ought to be less rigid and binary as she once thought, opening herself up to unexpected friendships and one much more unlikely relationship.
**Chad Danforth**
Troy’s childhood best friend and right-hand man on the basketball court, Chad is our archetype charismatic High School athlete. While naturally friendly and outgoing, he becomes greatly unnerved by his best friend's sudden interest in musical theatre. Firmly convinced that basketball and theatre are a socially disastrous mix, Chad initially shares in Coach Bolton's belief that athletic success is the only acceptable future. But, like much of our eclectic cast, he has his own journey of acceptance to embark upon. And, come on this is Disney, an enlightening relationship to look forward to along the way.
**Coach Bolton and Ms Darbus **
We can’t forget the few but pivotal adults who help steer the story. Coch Bolton, as mentioned, might as well have a bright orange basketball for a brain. So focused on his son's future on the court, he fails to recognise Troy's growing passion outside the school gym. Enter Ms Darbus (the other side of the spectrum), East High's eccentric theatre teacher and director, and equally as single minded as Coach Bolton in her belief that the school stage is of the utmost importance. As both remain initially unyielding in their own lanes, like their students, they must learn a lesson about the co-existence of seemingly opposite passions and social expectations.
