Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells to star in the revival of Amadeus

**Michael Sheen** and **Callum Scott Howells** are returning to the West End with the first major revival of **Peter Shaffer**’s *Amadeus* in over a decade. Directed by **Jeremy Herrin**, *Amadeus* will play at New Theatre Cardiff ahead of a 16 week run at the [Noël Coward Theatre](https://www.londontheatredirect.com/venue/noel-coward-theatre-london) from 17 April 2027.
*Amadeus* follows the story of the two rival composers **Antonio Salieri** and **Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart**, as Salieri falls into a toxic infatuation with the prodigy who he deems to be undeserving of his talent. Mutli-award winning **Michael Sheen** (*The Passion, Nye, Our Town*) will portray the resentful Salieri, opposite BAFTA Cymru winner **Callum Scott Howells** (*It’s a Sin, [Cabaret](https://www.londontheatredirect.com/musical/cabaret-london-tickets)* at the Kit Kat Club) who will play the musical genius, Mozart.
Sheen is all too familiar with the intense rivalry between the classical music geniuses, having played both Mozart at the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatredirect.com/venue/old-vic-theatre-london) and on Broadway in 1998/1999, and was Olivier nominated as a result of his performance. He has also played Salieri in the Sydney Opera House’s production in 2022. Whilst Sheen has taken on both roles in his lifetime, this revival will mark the first time two Welsh actors have taken on the iconic roles in the same production, an exciting opportunity for the Welsh National Theatre.
**Michael Sheen** says: “*It’s a full-circle moment for me to return to the West End with Amadeus. To play Salieri opposite a fellow Welshman as Mozart -a role that has meant so much to me - feels very special indeed. I directed Callum in my television drama The Way; he’s an extraordinary talent who deserves this stage, and audiences should be excited for what’s to come. To bring this vital new production to both Cardiff and the West End - a first for a Welsh National Theatre - feels like an important next step on our journey*.”
