In The Motive and the Cue, mega-star Richard Burton is newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, and is preparing to play the titular role in John Gielgud’s experimental, new production of Hamlet. But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.
Sam Mendes directs Johnny Flynn as Burton, Mark Gatiss as Gielgud and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor. The Motive and the Cue is inspired by Letters from an Actor by William Redfield and John Gielgud Directs Richard Burton in Hamlet by Richard L. Stern.

Jack Thorne (Harry Potter und das verfluchte Kind, seine dunklen Materialien) erforscht in seinem neuesten Stück The Motive and the Cue die stürmische Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Berühmtheit. Die Geschichte folgt Richard Burton (Johnny Flynn), frisch von seiner (ersten) Hochzeit mit Elizabeth Taylor. Burton bereitet sich darauf vor, die Titelrolle in John Gielguds (Mark Gatiss) experimenteller, reduzierter Produktion von Hamlet zu spielen. Es war ein Glücksspiel für den weltberühmtesten Schauspieler, ein so bekanntes Stück aufzuführen, wenn man bedenkt, dass er die Rolle zehn Jahre zuvor gespielt hatte.
Burtons Befürchtungen werden jedoch unbegründet, denn die Produktion wurde ein großer Erfolg und brach mit 137 Vorstellungen den Rekord für die längste Spielzeit des Stücks in der Broadway-Geschichte. Viele schrieben Burtons Persönlichkeit ebenso wie seiner Leistung den überwältigenden Erfolg der Show zu, aber wie wurde Richard Burton zu einem so globalen Phänomen?
