Named after the capital city of Northern Ireland, the HMS Belfast was a Royal Navy light cruiser, and saw service in many of the iconic conflicts of the 20th century.
The HMS Belfast helped to damage and immobilize the Tirpitz, Germany's last capital ship, taking only minor damage in the conflict, then carried King George VI during his pre-invasion visit to the Home Fleet. The Belfast also saw service in Normandy with D-Day, and in the Far East against Japan, before becoming part of the United Nations naval forces during the Korean War.
Saved from being reduced to scrap by a private trust, the HMS Belfast is now an award winning museum ship, part of Imperial War Museums. Its nine decks are dedicated to telling the stories of those who lived and worked aboard the ship throughout its time at sea.
Explore the ship: venture into the interactive Operations Room to see how this mighty warship works, then descend into the bowels of the ship to the Engine Room. Elevated vantage points provide excellent views up and down the Thames, while the gun turret experience puts visitors in the midst of a first battle - hear the sounds of a warship opening fire on its foes, like the HMS Belfast did in support of our allies on D-Day! Hear firsthand the experience of those aboard in the Life At Sea Exhibit.
Packed full of fascinating wartime history, the HMS Belfast is a must-see attraction.
