What is Pride the Musical about?

Funny, uplifting and full of warmth, Pride brings an extraordinary true story of friendship, solidarity and community to the stage. Based on the much-loved 2014 film, this brand-new musical follows the remarkable alliance between LGBTQ+ activists and striking Welsh miners in 1980s Britain.

Set in summer 1984, Pride tells the true story of a group of LGBTQ+ activists who decide to support striking miners during the national miners' strike.

Led by 24-year-old activist Mark Ashton, the group forms Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), raising money and building a relationship with a small mining community in South Wales. What begins as an unlikely partnership between two very different groups gradually develops into a powerful friendship, as both communities discover that they have more in common than they first imagined.

At its heart, Pride is a musical about solidarity, activism and the power of people coming together. It is also a celebration of friendship, community and the unexpected connections that can change people's lives.

Pride Characters

  • Mark Ashton - The 24-year-old activist who co-founded Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and first suggested redirecting the Pride bucket collection to striking miners. Ashton died of AIDS in 1987, aged 26.
  • Jonathan Blake - Gethin's partner and one of the first people diagnosed HIV-positive in the UK. He became part of the LGSM story alongside Gethin.
  • Gethin Roberts - A Welshman who had left his home village after coming out years earlier. Returning home with LGSM proved particularly difficult for him.
  • Mike Jackson - Mark Ashton's co-founder of LGSM, as well as his steadier best friend and fellow organiser.
  • Hefina Headon - Leader of the Dulais Valley Women's Support Group in Onllwyn, the South Wales mining community that LGSM eventually supported.
  • Siân James - A first-time volunteer with the Dulais Valley Women's Support Group who spoke up to invite LGSM to the village. She later became a Labour MP.

The National Theatre has announced its exciting 2027 season, with multiple starry names, musicals old and new, and gripping new plays. Along with an exciting and long overdue revival of West Side Story, Sondheim’s first major Broadway show and debut in 1957.  West Side Story will be playing at the Olivier Theatre in Autumn 2027. The production will be co-directed by Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell. What’s exciting about this revival is that Jerome Robbins’ original choreography is set to be reproduced and adapted for the stage by Julio Monge, who also worked on the choreography for the film.

Pride is transfering to the Bridge Theatre this November. Here's everything you need to know. What is it? The transfer of the show of the summer from the National Theatre to the Bridge Theatre is a musical based on the 2014 movie set during the 1980s when AIDs was on the rise and Margaret Thatcher was locked in a battle with striking miners. It tells the loosely true story of a group of gay and lesbian activists who raise money for the striking miners. But when the National Union of Miners turn their back on the donation, the gays set off to a small Welsh mining community, and an unlikely alliance is formed. Because the only people getting worse press in the tabloids than the miners were gay men.  Oh, so yet another musical jumping on a screen to stage reinvention? Don’t be so swift to judge. The movie is great (often cited as one of the best British films of this century), but actually writer Stephen Beresford and director Matthew Warchus (who did the movie too) don't just try to transpose the movie to the stage and add a few songs like so many do; they play to the fact that this is a story that absolutely shines when it is told as a live experience. It is an evening about community and solidarity told to a temporary community—the audience—and it constantly breaks the fourth wall in intriguing ways. The result is an evening which is actually better than its source material. No mean feat. Matthew Warchus? Didn’t he direct Matilda? He did. Another rare example of a musical which is a cut above its source, Roald Dahl’s novel.   Is it really that good? If you don’t believe me, then hear it from the Daily Mail, not the kind of publication with much sympathy for striking miners, gays, activism or those living with AIDS. They called it “a total triumph". For the sake of balance, here’s the Guardian verdict: “This is an uproarious musical roadmap, of sorts, reminding us of ways to love each other and a reminder that to overcome our fears, we must talk to those we are fearful of. As a musical, it becomes more than the sum of its parts: a remarkable piece of British social history, deeply moving, deeply important.”

Before it transfers to the Bridge theatre this November, here’s everything you need to know about Pride the Musical, including the true story behind the production, the history of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, its journey from screen to stage and what’s next for the musical in London. What is Pride the Musical about? Pride tells the story of an unlikely alliance between LGBTQ+ activists and striking Welsh miners during the 1984–85 miners' strike. The story begins in summer 1984, when 24-year-old activist Mark Ashton brings together a group of gay men and lesbians determined to support miners and their families during the strike. Together, they form Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, better known as LGSM. The group begins fundraising for a small mining community in South Wales. What initially seems like an unlikely partnership gradually develops into a genuine friendship, as the two communities discover shared experiences of discrimination, prejudice and fighting for their rights. Funny, moving and full of heart, Pride explores the power of solidarity and what can happen when people come together to support one another. The real history behind Pride Pride is based on the true story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, an LGBTQ+ activist group that supported striking miners during the 1984–85 miners' strike. Their efforts led them to build a relationship with a mining community in the Dulais Valley in South Wales. The alliance became an important example of different communities putting aside their differences and supporting each other. Who was Mark Ashton? Mark Ashton was a gay rights activist and one of the founders of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. He was just 24 when he helped establish the group in 1984. Ashton and his fellow activists began raising money for striking miners, creating a connection between London's LGBTQ+ community and mining communities in South Wales. His role is central to Pride, with the musical exploring both his activism and the relationships that developed through the LGSM campaign. What was the 1984 miners' strike? The miners’ strike was one of the most significant industrial disputes in modern British history. Beginning in March 1984, it saw the National Union of Mineworkers oppose the Conservative government’s plans to close coal mines and reduce the size of Britain’s coal industry. Under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the dispute became a major political and social confrontation, lasting almost a year and placing enormous financial pressure on mining communities across the country. As the strike continued, many miners and their families relied on support from friends, trade unions and communities elsewhere in Britain. It was against this backdrop that Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) began raising money for striking miners, eventually forming an extraordinary alliance with a mining community in South Wales. The miners’ strike provides the historical backdrop to Pride, but the musical is ultimately about the people and relationships that emerged from this turbulent period, and the unexpected solidarity that grew between two very different communities. Who were the Welsh miners in Pride? The musical follows LGSM's relationship with a small mining community in South Wales. At first, the two groups might appear to have little in common. The London activists and Welsh miners come from very different backgrounds and communities, but their relationship develops as they recognise the discrimination and political struggles they share. The friendship between the groups is at the heart of Pride, showing how solidarity can develop in the most unexpected circumstances. From the true story to the Pride film The story of LGSM was brought to a worldwide audience through the 2014 film Pride. Written by Stephen Beresford and directed by Matthew Warchus, the film starred an ensemble cast including Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Andrew Scott. The film became celebrated for combining comedy and warmth with a powerful story about LGBTQ+ rights, the miners' strike and community activism.
