Samuel Pepys. Committed to self-improvement and serial adultery, he is a man desperate to be at the cutting edge.

17c splices music, dance, video and spoken word in a reverb-soaked romp through the tell-all diaries of the famed 17-century diarist and his tragic wife Bess.

Conceived and directed by Annie-B Parson (Here Lies Love, Lazarus), New York City based company Big Dance Theater makes its UK premiere at The Old Vic.

It was exciting to see a big, ambitious experimental work like that in the context of the Old Vic. The piece seemed to have a lot of respect for its audience and trust in about abilities to make meaning from a work that wasn't conventionally linear or narrative. The ticket prices were, as ever, a deterrent and obviously exclude a potential audience who can't afford to pay this much. It would be great to see more of an effort made to stop the theatre being perceived as an elitist art form.

Acceptable. Not revolutionary. Enjoyable.
