Leonard Bernstein, one of the most influential composers of 20th-century American music, continues to inspire artists across generations. Created for The Royal Ballet’s Bernstein Centenary in 2018, Wayne McGregor’s Yugen is a striking contemporary ballet developed in collaboration with artist Edmund de Waal, fashion designer Shirin Guild, and lighting designer Lucy Carter. Contemplative, life-affirming and visually arresting, Yugen is McGregor’s powerful response to Bernstein’s hauntingly beautiful Chichester Psalms.
Minimalist artist Carmen Herrera inspired Wayne McGregor’s 2023 creation for The Royal Ballet, drawing on her bold, restrained use of form, colour and perspective. In a historic collaboration, Herrera designed her first and only stage work alongside McGregor. Set to Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s fierce, atmospheric score, with sculptural lighting by Lucy Carter and striking costumes by Burberry, this powerful contemporary ballet delivers an austere, elemental impact that is both visually and emotionally compelling.
