Broadway's Anastasia likely to transfer to London for its West End premiere!
Broadway’s hit new musical Anastasia is expected to swirl its way into the West End and we couldn’t be more thrilled to finally witness Anya’s journey of self-discovery for ourselves. Fans of the beloved animated film may have the last leg of the wait for this transfer to open its doors in London, but they can secure their tickets for Anastasia soon!
The musical adaptation is based both on the 1997 animated film and the 1956 Fox film, both of which are widely loved. Songs from Academy Award-nominated animated film are featured as well as new songs. Both of the film’s by Fox were based on a 1955 play of the same name by Marcelle Maurette. The book for this new musical comes from four-time Tony Award-winning writer Terrence McNally. Multi award-winning duo Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens are hugely acclaimed and have been collaborating since 1983, and have written the music and lyrics (having also written the score for the 1997 animated film).
What is Anastasia about?
Anastasia follows the story of a young woman, who on a journey from Russia, at the dusk of the empire, to the jubilation of 1920’s Paris, discovers the mystery of her own past. With the aid of a charming conman and an endearing ex-aristocrat, they embark on an epic adventure, attempting to leave behind the ruthless Soviet officer who is determined to silence Anya, and uncover those things long forgotten; family, home and love.
What’s new with the musical score?
Thankfully, song favourites from the 1997 animated film are featured including the hugely popular and acclaimed ‘Journey to the Past’ and ‘Once Upon a December,’ which will only be more stunning with a live band and being brought to life on stage. Old and new songs flow seamlessly, likely due to both scores being written by Flaherty and Ahrens. New songs to look forward to include ‘Crossing a Bridge’ and ‘In a Crowd of Thousands’.
This new musical already has a place in the hearts of many across the world due to the popular films, but this adaptation has leased a new bout of love and the transfer from across the pond is eagerly awaited here in London.

#WestEndWishList Anastasia The Musical
Journey to the fabricated past. Many are familiar with the worldwide phenomenon that was, and still is, Anastasia. Even after DNA findings in 1991 began to hint that the Russian Grand Duchess did not actually evade regicidal execution by the Bolsheviks, the world still romanticised her escape and the 1997 film transformed the legend into a modern fairytale. Even Russians who were well aware of the film’s many historical inaccuracies found the film to be nothing short of spectacular, complete with masterful storytelling and engaging Walt Disney-esque songs. The Fox Studios film was, in fact, one of the first non-Disney films to use the 'Disney formula' and challenge Walt Disney Studios (the film was later acquired by Disney anyway) and now, the fantastical story has received the full Broadway treatment! Anastasia currently runs on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre and many West End theatre fans are dying to see HRH in London! As part of our #WestEndWishList series, we are bringing you everything you need to know about Anastasia, both in real life and in fiction.
