Noted for her eccentricity and glamour, Tammy Faye took the 70s and 80s by storm with her fiery hair and small stature. Faye was a multi-talented individual and evangelist who tried her hand at a number of industries. A television presenter, singer and author are just a few of the jobs on her résumé.
At the height of the AIDS epidemic, she become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, during a time when most evangelists were not as considerate or accepting.
She and her husband Jim Bakker became the most successful televangelists of all time.
Later in her career, Tammy found herself surrounded by scandals; rumours of her husband's affair shook the Christian community, and it was thought that she and her husband were overspending into oblivion. However, she remerged from her fall from grace with her life and religion intact, to become the proponent of acceptance and compassion that she is known to be today. Now, her story has been redefined for the stage.
Headed by music by legendary singer, songwriter and composer Elton John, Tammy Faye is handled by a roster of ingenious creatives. The production is written by Tony Award nominee and Olivier Award winner James Graham (Ink, This House, Finding Neverland) with lyrics by Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters). Rubert Goold directs.
