Cole Escola in the role of Mary Todd Lincoln on Broadway

Who is Cole Escola?

Cole Escola is an American actor, comedian and writer, best known as the creator and original performer of the title role in Oh, Mary! on Broadway. Escola wrote the play and starred in its original production, earning widespread critical acclaim for their performance.

The Broadway production went on to win multiple Tony Awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Play for Cole Escola, making them the first openly non-binary performer to win in that category, as well as Best Direction of a Play for Sam Pinkleton. The wins cemented Oh, Mary! as one of Broadway’s most celebrated recent successes.

What is Oh, Mary! About?

Oh, Mary! is a darkly comic reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The play blends absurdist humour with (inaccurate!) historical fiction and has been praised for its hilarity and outlandish performances.

In London, the production, which plays at the Trafalgar Theatre, has already been a major success, winning the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play.

Who Has Played Mary Todd Lincoln in the West End So Far?

In the West End production, the role of Mary Todd Lincoln was previously played by Mason Alexander Park, and is currently being performed by Catherine Tate, both bringing their own interpretations to the role across the run.

Cole Escola to play Mary Todd Lincoln For Just 4 Weeks

Cole Escola’s appearance marks a rare opportunity for London audiences to see the show’s creator take on the role in person. With only four weeks scheduled, demand is expected to be extremely high.
