I was born in Afghanistan around the same time as the main character in the story and left Afghanistan around the same time as the main character leaves Afghanistan in the play so I may be a bit more critical than others ( despite the 4 stars I have given it). I also had not written the book or watched the movie before seeing the play. As a whole the play was very good. It made me cry as It reminded me of how things really were and also because it showed a reality which is too often lost or ignored in the news or documentaries about Afghanistan. The criticism I have is with a few scenes. For example in the birthday of the son in Kabul, the women in the play were dressed in Pakistani 'Shalwar Kameez' when the women in Kabul especially in an affluent family such as this would have not be wearing Shalwar kamees. They would most likely be wearing skirts. Also the character of the 'Psycho' neighbour seemed to be wearing some kind of Indian attire , not even the Afghan 'Payran-Tunban' but even he, in reality would have been wearing trousers and shirts. And I won’t make much of the Hazara boys father and his thick Indian accent . Otherwise a very good play and most recommended
