What is The Tin Drum about?

Oskar recognises the world to be a universal disaster, rejecting it entirely despite being barely born. In a world that is at the dawn of the National Socialist regime, Oskar doesn’t have many opportunities to grasp in order to grow and survive. Having been thrown into a world with nothing to give him, it all seems a bit void for the boy, until his mother promises him a tin drum. Finally, an acceptable prospect is born and a chance for survival unfolds: the life of a drummer and an observer.

The Berliner Ensemble

The Tin Drum production comes from German theatre company The Berliner Ensemble. They were named after Bertolt Brecht’s world-famous company and are one of the most renowned and long-standing theatres in Germany. It has a 125-year history which reflects a tradition for presenting work that is current with the issues of our time. The company will be making their first visit to the UK since 2006 with The Tin Drum which has been adapted and directed by their current artistic director Oliver Reese.
