She Perisisted tickets are now available to the English National Ballet’s follow up to the breakthrough She Said programme of 2016. The English National Ballet made a bold statement by presenting a mixed bill with the world premieres of 3 pieces by female choreographers. Their goal to support and celebrate women’s voices in dance was wildly successful and they have returned in 2019 with She Persisted.
Sadler’s Wells mixed programme
She Persisted brings three works by female choreographers to the Sadler’s Wells main stage. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Broken Wings premiered at She Said and returns to the stage along with Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) from Pina Bausch. Premiering her first commission for the main stage will be Stina Quagabeur with her Ibsen inspired Nora.
Works by female choroegraphers
Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Broken Wings is a biopic piece bringing the life of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to the stage. Written for a cast of 26 ENB dancers, this visceral journey through the struggles of Kahlo brings us face to face with her art, relationships and physical struggles. Frida Kahlo is known for her shocking self-portraits and personal life. The piece highlights the difficulty the artist faced after a streetcar accident left her physically broken and also shows her turbulent relationship with husband Diego Rivera.
Renowned choreographer Pina Bausch had a huge influence on ballet during her life, and that influence can still be felt today. Her Le Sacre du printemps, The Rite of Spring, takes us through a world on the verge of spring and the search for The Chosen One. She who will be the sacrifice to mark the end of winter, she who will dance to the death.
Following her piece Vera, written for an ENB choreography workshop at the Barbican, Stina Quagebeur will premiere her first main stage commission at She Persisted. Her new piece Nora is inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Stina represents a new generation of female choreographers who are set to revitalise the world of ballet with their fresh new voices.
