San Francisco Ballet UK premiere of Shostakovich Trilogy!
In a triple bill of works, world-class choreographer Alexei Ratmansky pays tribute to Dmitri Shostakovich. The theatricality of his compositions have led Ratmansky to return again and again to the Russian composer’s work. His music and life story serve as a through-line for these three ballets. San Francisco Ballet Programme A: Shostakovich Trilogy tickets are available for 3 performances only, so you’ll want to secure your tickets as soon as possible.
The three pieces, Symphony #9, Chamber Symphony and Piano Concerto #1 are an abstract reflection of the varied and at tumultuous life and experiences of Shostakovich.
Though he is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century, Shostakovich had a difficult and at times troubled relationship with the Soviet government. Like all Soviet artists of the time, his career was at the pleasure of the government, and though he would at times earn great fame and accolades, he was also twice denounced and his work was heavily censored.
Who are the San Francisco Ballet?
San Francisco Ballet have a long history of pushing boundaries in dance and making history. After their creation in 1933, they staged the first full-length American productions of Coppélia and Swan Lake. In 1944 they birthed an American holiday tradition by producing the first full-length production of Nutcracker in the United States.
San Francisco Ballet is headed Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer, Helgi Tomasson. They are accompanied by their own orchestra and operate one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the country.
