In a dazzling cross-cultural takeover, SIX Japan proved that the language of defiance needs no translation.
In November 2025, something remarkable happened in London’s West End. For one week, the Vaudeville Theatre, home to the ever-popular SIX the Musical, was ruled by a different set of queens. The Japanese cast of SIX, fresh from a triumphant run across Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, took over the London stage, performing the entire show in Japanese with English subtitles. It was a dazzling exchange of cultures, but more than that, it was a musical revolution in representation.
The production’s premise remained the same: the six wives of Henry VIII reclaim their stories through a pop-concert lens, rewriting history with electric wit and vocal power. But this time, their voices carried the rhythm and intonation of Japanese, layered over a language of performance that transcended translation.
Led by Sonim as Catherine of Aragon, with Meimi Tamura and Maho Minamoto alternating as Anne Boleyn, Harumi as Jane Seymour, Eliana and Marie Sugaya alternating as Anna of Cleves, Airi Suzuki and Erika Toyohara alternating as Katherine Howard, and Sora Kazuki and Ruki Saito sharing the role of Catherine Parr, the Japanese queens delivered a show that was both familiar and thrillingly new. It was the first foreign-language production of SIX ever to appear on the West End stage - a statement as symbolic as it was artistic.

Six the Musical has quickly cemented itself as a West End crown jewel since its premiere in 2019. Whether it be the glamour of the one-of-a-kind (no category) costumes or the pure spectacle of a pop concert inspired by history, there is a lot to love about Six. However, the songs remain the crowning glory of Six, having captured the hearts of many Spotify playlists and picking up masses of awards along the way, including the Tony Award for Best Original Score.
1. "Ex-Wives"
The opening number introduces all six queens in a high-energy, showstopping ensemble number. They assert their identities beyond the traditional rhyme, declaring, "Divorced, Beheaded, Died; Divorced, Beheaded, Survived”. This song establishes the show's mission to give a voice to female figures in a history dominated by men, getting everyone on board for the histo-remix.
2. "No Way"
Catherine of Aragon is the first to take the spotlight with a powerful anthem inspired by Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. She refuses to accept Henry's attempts to annul their marriage, and her scorn as the first ex-wife sears through in this R&B song that wraps itself in soulful vulnerability.
3. "Don't Lose Ur Head"
Anne Boleyn's cheeky and rebellious nature shines in this track, inspired by pop-icons Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne. The song narrates her flirtation with Henry and the ensuing scandal, using modern slang and a handful of…apt wordplay. Playful as the song may be, it also serves as a reminder of the double standards as Anne faces severe consequences (i.e. decapitation) for actions similar, if not the same, to Henry's.
4. "Heart of Stone"
Heart of Stone, sung by ‘the only one he truly loved’, Jane Seymour, is the powerhouse emotional ballad of the musical, written with inspiration from artists like Adele and Sia. She expresses her unwavering love for Henry, acknowledging the sacrifices she made, including her life, to provide him with a male heir. This number is full of emotion and major belts, making it as much a tear-jerker as it is a crowd pleaser.

You know their names, but do you know their stories? The six wives of Henry VIII are barely footnotes in traditional history, but in HER-story, they’re everything. In this rebellious celebration of womanhood, we meet the women mostly known for their demise and learn more about them and their stories. So join us as we delve into the SIX The Musical characters.
For all intents and purposes, yes! Each of the characters is based on one of Henry VIII’s wives. However, the male-dominated history books generally limit their tales to the King’s legend. SIX The Musical gives the ill-fated women the opportunity to stand up and yell for themselves. The show sees the wives recounting their experiences with the dastardly royal while battling for the role of lead singer in their band. But as the SIX The Musical characters realise they have been robbed of their individuality, they come together and create their own ending.
Creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss altered the timelines and passions of the six wives, but not the history. Find out what happens to the SIX The Musical characters below.
Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of Henry VIII and the catalyst for his dispute and departure from Pope Clement VII. During their marriage, Catherine suffered many child losses and produced only one heir, a daughter named Mary. This - plus his wandering eye - led the King to seek an annulment, which was denied by the church. While he tried to separate from her legitimately, Henry attempted to send Catherine to a nunnery despite her loyalty. Catherine’s big SIX The Musical song is “No Way.”
The subject of infatuation and later a victim of repeated history was Anne Boleyn - Henry VIII's second wife. While serving as maid-of-honour to Catherine, Anne caught Henry’s eye. In the show, she boasts about turning the head of the King. In real life, she was a key figure in the English Reformation. In the show, we hear of Anne's flirtations with other men when Henry’s attention is diverted by her maid-of-honour, Jane Seymour. This leads to her beheading and the song “Don’t Lose Ur Head.”
Ridiculed for having the easiest time and being the only wife Henry truly loved, Jane defends her hardships to her fellow wives by claiming that his affection is conditional. As the mother of the King’s only legitimate, surviving son, Jane’s marriage met a natural end free of disgrace when she died in 1537 following complications in childbirth. In the show, she sings “Heart of Stone.”

The Vaudeville Theatre, located on The Strand, opened in 1870 and is close neighbours with the Adelphi Theatre and the Savoy Theatre. The theatre mostly staged vaudeville shows and musical revues in its early years and has been rebuilt twice in its lifetime. The original theatre, with its then capacity of 1046, stood behind two houses with its entrance via a maze of small corridors, meaning facilities front of house and backstage were extremely cramped.
The Vaudeville Theatre auditorium consists of Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle and seats 690 theatregoers over its three levels. With a slight rake, the Stalls offer a very good view of the stage and sightlines and legroom are all good from this section. Due to the intimate size of the theatre the Dress Circle also offers good views of the stage however views from row G backwards are affected by the overhang of the Grand Circle above. The Grand Circle sits above the Dress Circle and therefore feels most distant from the stage, however, in such a cosy space you never really feel too far away from the action.
