Broadway’s To Kill A Mockingbird West End transfer to star Rhys Ifans

After the announcement last month that Aaron Sorkin’s To Kill A Mockingbird would be transferring to the West End’s Gielgud Theatre from 21 May 2020, we now have the first piece of exciting casting news! Rhys Ifans will play the lead role of Atticus Finch in the production; the iconic character was originated on Broadway by Jeff Daniels and is currently played by Ed Harris. Tickets for To Kill A Mockingbird, based on Harper Lee’s award-winning novel, are currently not on sale but if you sign up to our mailing list then you’ll be the first to know when they are!

Rhys Ifans cast as Atticus Finch

The first casting announcement has been made for the Scott Rudin, Barry Diller and Sonia Friedmans ProductionsTo Kill A Mockingbird and it has increased the excitement for this Broadway transfer tenfold. The acclaimed Rhys Ifans will be leading the cast of the play at the Gielgud Theatre in the role of Atticus Finch. Rhys Ifans is a Welsh actor and musician who is known for various roles across film, television and theatre. He is recognised for playing Spike in Notting Hill, Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Dr Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man. His stage work has seen him play Fool in King Lear at the Old Vic, and Ebenezer Scrooge in Matthew Warchus’ A Christmas Carol, also at the Old Vic.

To Kill A Mockingbird, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee of the same name, is set in Alabama in 1934. The story follows Atticus Finch, the small town’s lawyer and one of American Literature’s most revered characters. The play also still includes characters you know from the novel such as Atticus’ daughter Scout, her brother Jem, and of course the infamous Boo Radley, their mysterious neighbour.

To Kill A Mockingbird is the most successful American play in the history of Broadway, having had a consistent sell-out run. 2020 will see not just the West End transfer but a US tour, both of which will mark the 60th anniversary of Harper’s novel of racial injustice and the innocence of childhood. His novel has sold 45 million copies across the world since being published and is renowned worldwide.
