What is To Die For [A Comedy] about?

Elena Langer’s darkly comic opera is a sharp, subversive satire on celebrity culture, media obsession, and the absurdity of modern life. Bold, witty, and thought-provoking, this black farce turns existential despair into brilliantly chaotic comedy.

Originally commissioned by the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre, the opera was cancelled after the invasion of Ukraine for being deemed insufficiently patriotic.

The story follows Semyón Podsekayev, whose failed dream of salvation through tuba-playing spirals into a media circus when opportunists exploit his suicidal crisis for profit. Based on Nikolai Erdman’s 1928 play, this two-part comic opera is a razor-sharp exploration of fame, greed, and spectacle.

What do the critics say about Elena Langer's previous productions?

  • 'Highly recommended for opera lovers looking to experience something different, and for theatergoers wanting to make the switch from musical to opera.' - Place de l'Opera, on To Die For.
  • 'Effortlessly witty' - The Guardian on Four Sisters at the Royal Opera House.
  • 'Joyous daft gem' The ArtsDesk on Four Sisters at the Royal Opera House.
  • 'Irrepressible and darkly comic' The Times on Four Sisters at the Royal Opera House.
