We are used to scenarios centered around characters such as these - at that period of American history - but this trio of plays opens up many of the close personal issues arising from the events so is much more interesting.

This was an excellent production of a very well written play. The playwright covered so many important aspects of two big topics - the American Civil war and slavery and their impact on relationships with admirable courage but also with a light touch. The acting was superb throughout. There were no "big names" but that did not detract from the overall quality of the production. Well done The Royal Court - an afternoon of 5 star entertainment at a very reasonable price. The café/restaurant wasn't bad either.

The writing, themes, cast, acting all top notch. It was a fine evening of theater.

Excellent production, script almost poetic.

I thought the play and the acting both splendid, the lighting in the first scene a bit inept (why have a lantern in 1862 so obviously electric and why have the cabin lit when the sun is not up yet?). And the electric guitar music was completely inappropriate to 1862 (when acoustic guitar and fine ballads from the period are available), so inappropriate it was annoying and distracting from the quality of the play. The well-played and sung music would have been fine in another setting, but not suitable here at all.
