What is Soul of Shaolin The Play about?

Soul of Shaolin is about a mother’s love for her son. When their beloved home becomes shrouded in civil conflict and violence, Hui Guang gets separated from his mother after hiding him from all the turmoil. He was left with a piece of jade to help identify where he came from. Soon after, Hui Guang is discovered by a monk named Na Luo, who decides to take him under his wing and bring him to the mystical Shaolin Monastery. It is here where Hui Guang begins to train in the exquisite art of Shaolin Kung Fu from a very young age. One day, years later, Hui Guang comes across his mother in the street, now homeless and begging passersby for money. She recognises the jade in Hui Guang’s pocket and trespasses on the monastery grounds. After being caught and interrogated, it is clear who she is and she asks to take Hui Guang home with her. The Head Monk refuses her request and states that if Hui Guang truly wants to leave, he must fight his way out of the temple.

A production history of Soul of Shaolin

The critically-acclaimed show Soul of Shaolin received its world premiere at the 2008 Summer Olympics as a feature of the Beijing Arts Festival. After the production received overwhelming praise in China, it transferred to Broadway in 2009 for a 21-performance run at the Marquis Theatre. Despite its strictly limited run, Soul of Shaolin managed to be nominated for Best Theatrical Event at the 63rd Annual Tony Awards, losing to Liza’s at the Palace…!, and a 2009 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, losing to Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words.

The Broadway production starred Shaolin Temple Wushu Martial Artists Yu Fei as Hui Guang, Zhang Zhigang as Na Luo, Wang Yazhi as Hui Guang’s mum, and Bai Guojun as the Head Monk and Abbot of Shaolin Monastery. The show was both choreographed and directed by Liu Tongbiao.
