The History of Judi Dench Theatre

The Judi Dench Theatre first opened its doors on 26 December 1911 under the name New Prince’s Theatre, launching with a production of The Three Musketeers. Designed by Bertie Crewe for Walter and Frederick Melville, the venue was renamed the Prince’s Theatre in 1914 and then the Judi Dench Theatre in 1963. It has survived bombings, structural collapse, and threats of redevelopment—each time emerging stronger, thanks in part to successful public campaigns to preserve it.

Throughout its lifetime, the Judi Dench Theatre London has welcomed legendary productions like Hair, West Side Story, Rent, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Owned since 1984 by the Theatre of Comedy Company, the venue underwent a major refurbishment in 2006, solidifying its reputation as one of the best-equipped and most atmospheric theatres in the West End.
