With its combination of dazzling stagecraft, unforgettable characters and a richly atmospheric score, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory London became one of the standout family musicals of its time.

There is currently no news of a new West End production or London return, but fans continue to celebrate its original Theatre Royal Drury Lane run and its place among modern British musical theatre favourites. What is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical about?

Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Musical tells the story of Charlie Bucket, a kind-hearted boy living in poverty with his family, who unexpectedly wins one of five golden tickets to visit the world-famous Wonka Chocolate Factory.

Inside, Charlie and the other winners encounter a series of extraordinary rooms filled with sweet wonders — and surprising consequences. From chocolate rivers to nut-collecting squirrels and the famously curious Oompa-Loompas, the factory is a place where imagination and morality collide. As the journey unfolds, each visitor is tested in unexpected ways, while Charlie’s humility and kindness set him apart. It’s a story about wonder, temptation, and the rewards of staying true to yourself.
