Mean Girls the Musical History

The 2004 hit film starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams is still in the god tier of teen films 15 years later. The film remains just as popular as Queen Bee Regina George at North Shore High but needed some modern tweaks for the West End stage. This musical adaptation features the same characters and story we know and love, but with a modern twist as it has been updated to fit in with the trends of today.

Teens back in the early noughties were mean but, in this generation, smartphones, social media and teens go hand in hand. Meaning that this Mean Girls West End production is guaranteed to fit in with the social media era.

Mean Girls London is based on Tina Fey's screenplay for the 2004 film of the same name, which, in turn, drew inspiration from Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes. The musical made its debut at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., in October 2017 and later opened on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in April 2018. • For the musical, Fey had to extensively research modern ways in which girls can be mean to each other because the film was released in 2004…19 years ago.
• The 2023 version of Mean Girls retains the same plot but has been updated to reflect the current times, with most of your favourite lines from the original still included.
• The cafeteria cliques have been altered to fit the present-day context.
• The film incorporates humour related to social media, mobile apps, and the internet.

Mean Girls in London is suitable for ages 12+. Children under the age of 3 are not permitted in the theatre and anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or over. The accompanying adult must be seated with the under 16. The production contains some mature content (well, it isn't called Nice Girls). Strobe lighting is used throughout the show.
