Mean Girls History
The 2004 hit film starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams is still in the god tier of teen films 15 years later. The film remains just as popular as Queen Bee Regina George at North Shore High but needed some modern tweaks for the stage. This musical adaptation features the same characters and story we know and love, but with a modern twist as it has been updated to fit in with the trends of today.
Teens back in the early noughties were mean but, in this generation, smartphones, social media and teens go hand in hand. Meaning that this production is guaranteed to fit in with the social media era.
Mean Girls The Musical is based on Tina Fey's screenplay for the 2004 film of the same name, which, in turn, drew inspiration from Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes. The musical made its debut at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., in October 2017 and later opened on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in April 2018. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broadway production concluded on March 11, 2020.
Additionally, there's a film adaptation of Mean Girls The Musical currently in the works, set to be released in theatres on January 12, 2024. Mean Girls in the West End is sure to be just as in demand as on Broadway, so make sure to book your Mean Girls The Musical tickets as soon as possible.

- Tina Fey named the character Glen Coco after a real person who was a friend of her brother, which probably caused quite the inconvenience for him.
- Daniel Franzese improvised the famous line, "I want my pink shirt back," which was well-received by Fey, so she decided to keep the film.
- For the musical, Fey had to extensively research modern ways in which girls can be mean to each other because the film was released in 2004…19 years ago.
- The 2023 version of Mean Girls retains the same plot but has been updated to reflect the current times, with most of your favourite lines from the original still included.
- The cafeteria cliques have been altered to fit the present-day context.
- The film incorporates humour related to social media, mobile apps, and the internet.

Mean Girls will not return to the Broadway stage after coronavirus
Based on the modern classic film that starred Lindsay Lohan in her prime, Tina Fey's Mean Girls musical will not continue its Broadway run after theatres are permitted to re-open. The hit show saw Gretchen Wieners portrayed by Ashley Park, who was nominated for both a Tony and Drama Desk Award and garnered attention recently for her role as Chinese-Korean nanny Mindy Chen on Netflix's Emily in Paris. Mean Girls is expected to transfer to London's West End, though likely due to COVID-19, no venue or potential opening dates have been confirmed as of yet.
