Noises Off to receive a West End transfer soon?

It has recently been reported that a West End transfer for Michael Frayn's award-winning play Noises Off — now showing at the Lyric Hammersmith in London  is currently in the works. Negotiations are underway for the classic slapstick comedy to transfer to the Garrick Theatre in London's West End, which is currently housing David Mamet's provocative new play, Bitter Wheat starring John Malkovich.

The highly-likely West End production is aiming to begin performances in autumn 2020, specifically in late September or early October. The West End cast is now under negotiations and at press time it is unknown whether the London Lyric Hammersmith cast will reprise their roles.

Noises Off production history

The present Lyric Hammersmith run of Noises Off marks 37 years since the play received its London premiere at the venue back in 1982. The Michael Frayn piece swiftly became a British classic and later transferred to the West End's Savoy Theatre, where it continued to run until 1987 with five casts. The show went on to win Best Comedy at the Evening Standard Awards.

The original 1984 Broadway production was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Play, and won two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Director of a Play (Michael Blakemore) and Outstanding Ensemble Performance as well as an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Director.

Following its initial Broadway run, Noises Off became a staple production on both sides of the pond with a Tony Award-winning revival on Broadway in 2001 and four-time Tony Award-nominated revival on Broadway in 2015. A London revival at the Old Vic Theatre ran from 2011 to 2012 before transferring to the West End's Novello Theatre.
