What is We Are Arrested about?

We Are Arrested is a compelling play about the struggle to promote the truth amidst a web of lies.

When the editor of a highly-regarded news publication is sent a flash-drive with damning evidence of the president's attempts to smuggle weapons into a bordering country, he is adamant on getting the story published. Little do the public and the parliament know that publishing these photos of illegal government activity could throw the nation into complete political turmoil and an all-out war. But publish them he does, and the resulting uproar changes everything.

He soon becomes arrested and charged with espionage, facing a sentence of lifetime imprisonment in solitary confinement. Forced to abandon his wife and son, only his unwavering imagination can help him cope with life in a prison cell. And as much as his government captors wish to stop the press, he soon begins to fiercely defy them when he discovers a loophole around the prison's colour ban, which allows him to smuggle out risky exposés. Though he is eventually released from incarceration, the government's control of the media and the judicial system makes his pleas for a fair trial all the more difficult.

The play is based on the book of the same name by journalist Can Dündar, who was arrested after leaking footage of the Turkish State Intelligence illegally exporting weapons to Syria. This troubling story receives a new lease of life amidst the rise of authoritarian governments and populist regimes around the world. It also recalls the bone-chilling recent events surrounding the assassination of Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi.
