Mark Rylance returns to the Marylebone Theatre to star in Tartuffe (Remixed). An adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy, written and directed by Darren Raymond, the story is now told in a Nigerian-Jamaican household in modern England. A biting comedy in rhyming couplets, with new humour adding modern pathos to the original book.
The outspoken Afolabi–Williams family gathers at Oga Afolabi's mansion as preparations begin for the wedding of his daughter. Relatives travelling across seas, traditions in full swing, emotions are high but of course, the opinions are never in short supply.
Tartuffe, a charismatic man of God and close friend to Oga takes up residence in the family home. But amongst his arrival, Oga’s unwavering trust in him is tested, when old wounds are reopened, testing loyalties and faith. With the wedding day drawing closer, the family must expose the truth before everything they hold dear is torn apart.
Blending razor-sharp comedy, spoken word, music and beautifully crafted rhyming verse, this vibrant new adaptation is a joyful celebration of faith, family, forgiveness and the courage to speak truth to power.
