Strauss’s legendary one-act opera based on Oscar Wilde’s play is a short yet intense look at the story of Salome.
Salome is used to being given whatever she wants and to affecting men in powerful ways. She uses her power to extract a promise from Herod and what she finally requests is shocking. Shaped by the brutality and indecency of those around her, Salome takes the ultimate step into her parents’ twisted world.
This powerful one-act opera has changed and influenced the music of the last century. Salome, including the ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’, has become a part of the classic opera canon.
The ENO’s new production sees the operatic debut of theatre director Adena Jacobs. Allison Cook makes her ENO debut as Salome and is joined by Michael Calvin as Herod and mezzo Susan Bickley as Herodias and bass David Soar as Jokanaan. ENO music director Martyn Brabbins conducts.
